Mission: Patient-centered care to people who inject drugs (PWID) is at the heart of the student-run DOCS IDEA Clinic. PWID are extremely marginalized and have difficulties accessing quality healthcare. Our services are geared towards harm reduction and prevention in order to mitigate poor health outcomes associated with injection drug use. Our clinic will provide students with a positive learning environment in which to develop their clinical skills, practice empathy and promote culturally competent care. The DOCS IDEA Clinic is designed to further the mission of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, to graduate physicians with the ability and desire to improve the health of all populations by alleviating suffering and eliminating healthcare disparities through their leadership in patient care, research, education, health care administration and the community.

DOCS IDEA Thursday Night Wound Care Clinic Overview

3:00pm- 7:00pm/last patient is seen

NOTE: At this time, due to high clinic volume, we are only seeing individuals who are part of the IDEA Needle Exchange for the treatment of substance use disorder. However, wound care is still available to everyone.

The primary goal for IDEA DOCS Student Clinic is to provide wound care to participants enrolled in the needle exchange program. The services provided by this clinic will include incision and drainage of skin abscesses, harm reduction counseling, and general health screenings.

Students volunteering at the DOCS IDEA Clinic will have to opportunity to:

  • Assist physicians in performing incision and drainage of skin abscesses
  • Conduct physicals and full patient histories
  • Conduct needle exchanges
  • Perform HIV and Hepatitis C screening
  • Provide harm reduction counseling
